GPD Pocket 4 is an 8.8 inch mini-laptop with up to AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 (crowdfunding)

The GPD Pocket 4 is a mini-laptop with an 8.8 inch, 2560 x 1600 pixel, 144 Hz display, support for up to an AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 “Strix Point” processor, and a convertible design that lets you twist the screen 180 degrees and fold it down over the keyboard for use in tablet mode.

While most of GPD’s other devices released in recent yars are designed first and foremost for gaming, the GPD Pocket 4 is a more of a productivity machine that can also be used for gaming. It has a QWERTY keyboard that should be large enough for touch typing, plenty of ports including USB4 and 2.5 GbE LAN, and a modular section that lets you add a port or 4G LTE module. First introduced earlier this year, the GPD Pocket 4 is now available for pre-order for $829 and up through an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign. It’s expected to begin shipping to backers in January, 2025.

Keep in mind that the starting price is for a model with a previous-gen AMD Ryzen 7 8840U “Hawk Point” processors featuring a Zen 4 CPU, RDNA 3 graphics, and a 16 TOPS NPU.

Higher-priced configurations with Ryzen AI 9 HX 365 or Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 “Strix Point” chips have Zen 5 CPUs, RDNA 3.5 graphics, and NPUs with up to 50 TOPS of AI performance.

Here are the crowdfunding and retail prices for each:

IGG price Retail price
Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 with 64GB + 2TB $1335 $1466
Ryzen AI 9 HX 365 with 32GB + 2TB $1057 $1157
Ryzen 7 8840U with 16GB + 1TB $829 $895

For the most part, the GPD Pocket 4 seems like a natural evolution of the 3-year-old GPD Pocket 3. The new model has a design that’s very similar, but it features a bigger screen with a faster refresh rate, a significantly faster processor (and a switch from Intel to AMD), and speedier memory.

In order to make room for the larger display the GPD Pocket 4 has a slightly larger body, but if you believe the promotional pictures it may also have slimmer bezels around the screen.

Another change? Like the GPD Pocket 3, the new Pocket 4 has a modular port section that lets you choose whether you want an extra USB Type-A port, an RS-232 port, or a KVM module.

What’s new for this the Pocket 4 is that GPD plans to offer a few new modules, including a 4G LTE module that will sell for $110 during crowdfunding or $125 at retail. The company never released an official 4G module for the Pocket 3 (although there is an unofficial one).

The RS-232 module will sell for $14 during crowdfunding and $20 at retail, while the KVM module will sell for $48 during the Indiegogo campaign and $55 after it ends.

Perhaps the biggest change is that instead of a 2021-era Intel processor, the GPD Pocket 4 is powered by recent AMD processors with higher-performance CPU and GPU hardware as well as dedicated NPUs for hardware-accelerated AI capabilities.

The entry-level model features an AMD Ryzen 7 8840U processor with Zen 4 CPU cores, 24MB of cache, and RDNA 3 graphics, while higher-priced models feature AMD Ryzen AI 300 series processor options that combine Zen 5 and Zen 5C CPU cores with RDNA 3.5 graphics and up to 36MB of cache.

Some things that haven’t changed? The mini-laptop is so small that there’s not much room for a traditional touchpad. But instead of the optical touch sensor used in the GPD Pocket 2, the Pocket 3 and 4 do have a touchpad.

It’s just a small one that’s positioned above the right side of the keyboard, with left and right click buttons on the left. This makes it a touchpad that you can use while holding the computer in two hands… but I suspect that it’ll be easier to use an external mouse if you plan on using the little PC on a desk or table.
